  • CONGRATULATIONS to Moulthun Ly on gaining his IM title while playing in the Dutch Open! A very worthy title for him. We've closely watched his progress - especially as Moulthun was the first winner of our junior masters competition in term 2, 2003.

    Gold Coast United Soccer players are being taught chess to help them think tactically in order to out-manoeuvre their opponents. In this photo, Michael Thwaites and Daniel Severino discuss their next move against Glen Moss and Zac Anderson, while Graeme looks on.   • FM Gene Nakauchi has come second in the Japan Open held recently. This is a very fine result. He won 120,000 yen, which is about $1,500. Well done Gene!

  • Australian Championships - Gold Coast juniors Gene Nakauchi and Alex Stahnke both performed very well at the Australian Championships. In the main event Gene scored a very creditable 5.5/11, with a performance rating of 2259. Alex had his best performance so far with equal third place in the Major, scoring 8/11 and performing at 2142. Full results here.
  • Australian Junior Championships - Alex Stahnke continued his astonishing run of much improved form at the Australian Junior Championships, where he scored 7/11, finishing in 6th equal place, and winning the Australian Under 14 title outright.
  • Congratulations also to Leteisha Simmonds and Abbie Kanagarajah, who both went undefeated through the Australian Open Girls Championship scoring 8/9. Leteisha, who is only just out of primary school, convincingly won the play off to become Australian Girls Champion (Under 18)
