State of Origin Tournament

NSW have smashed Queensland by 53 points to 29 in the annual state of origin chess match. This year the organiser, Queensland supremo Dr David Richards, was unable to bring out of his hat his usual bag of wizardry. No amount of match fixing or team switching could save Queensland from this ultimate humiliation. Indeed, there were calls for the NSW team to be drug tested after their awe inspiring display, which was epitomised in this 'shirt front' by Fred Rosenow over David Richards.

White: Fred Rosenow Black: David Richards (Queen's Gambit Reversed Shirtfront) 1.d4 d5 2.Bg5 c5 3.dxc Qa5 4.Nc3 Qxc5 5.Qxd5 e6???????? 6.Qd8!!!!!!!!

Ex-Queenslanders Amy Evans, Sam Grigg and Alexandra Jule headed the NSW effort, scoring 12/12 for their newly-adopted state. They are unlikely to be given a ticker-tape welcome upon their return to Queensland. Spencer Richards was the best Queensland performer with 6, putting his father David (3), the Queensland captain, to shame.

Gold Coast Club Championships - from 11 May.

Round 6

Peter Cormick defeated Matt Sonter in round 6 to throw the club championship wide open. With two rounds to play, Matt Sonter, Manfred Rosenow and Peter Cormick lead on 4.5 from David Richards and Alex Jule on 4, with Alex Ruddy and Bernie Saavedra on 3.5.

Round 5

Matt Sonter and Alex Jule drew their top board clash in round five of the club championship. With three rounds to go, Matt Sonter now leads on 4.5/5 from Fred Rosenow, Peter Cormick and Alex Jule.

Round 4

Matthew Sonter took a one point lead at the halfway point in the club championship with a convincing win over David Richards. Fred Rosenow and Alexandra Jule are in equal second place. A group of seven players, including Peter Cormick, David Richards, Terry Munro, Amy Evans, Thimos Mastorakis, Kelvin Finke and Bernie Saavedra, are on 2.5.

Mudgeeraba Creek State School Fair Tournament

Fifteen hardy young souls braved the elements to play in this fun tournament. It started with unseasonably hot sun slanting in to the 'shade' tent - but soon the heat was replaced with slanting heavy rain. Unfortunately the tent was merely shade cloth and soon the chess pieces were almost swimming. Despite these drawbacks the players all enjoyed the challenge and the McGarity kids came up smiling, Molly taking first place and Liam second alongside Pattama Songkhunawej.  The results, which are being sent for Queensland rating, are here.

The organisers of the Creek Fair are to be congratulated for putting together such a fun day for both kids and adults. The rain didn't dampen anyone's spirits.

Surfers Paradise Mind Games Festival

Around 600 entrants participated in the inaugural Surfers Paradise Mind Games Festival. Events included Chess, Bridge, Euchre, 500, Scrabble, Kaleidoscope and others. Numbers exceeded the organisers’ target of 500. The Surfers Paradise Management Association is hopeful of renewing the grant from the Queensland Events Corporation in 2005.

On each of the three evenings, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, play was followed by impressive fireworks displays.

All in all everyone had a great time, and we are delighted that this is likely to be an annual event.

On the Friday evening, GM Darryl Johansen gave a 30 player blindfold simul in Cavill Avenue . This was quite extraordinary, as play was constantly interrupted by a very loud singer, and two "celebrities" from 'The Block' who didn't seem to endear themselves to anyone. Darryl managed to keep his head and his cool to defeat all eight opponents in fine style. Whilst all this was going on, Stephen Solomon was playing a 40 player simul. There were some quite strong opponents and Toshi Kimura and Phachara Wongwichit both managed wins.

The Surfers Paradise Premier Rapid Chess Tournament was held on Saturday 29 May and a field of 137 assembled under an airy and well-lit marquee right next to the beach on the Esplanade. Very nice! Darryl Johansen was pushed by IMs Stephen Solomon and Alex Davidovic but ended up a convincing winner on 7.5/8. All eyes (right) are on the top table as tension mounts.

Gold Coast Rapid Championships

IM Alex Davidovic from Adelaide has won the Gold Coast Rapid Championship. He was never in trouble in any of his games, and took a draw in the final round to ensure victory on 5.5/6. This was his first event since 1998 and the first time he had used the digital clock with increments. Dr Davidovic is on the coast for term two enjoying a sabbatical. He is coaching at local schools and coaches a few students at the centre.

Final results:

1st Alex Davidovic $125 + Trophy
2nd Ben Lazarus $85 + Trophy
3rd Moulthun Ly $50 + Trophy

Ratings Prizes:

Rating Group A John O'Brien $30
Rating Group B Steven Cooke $30
Rating Group C Yitao Lei $30
Rating Group D Jonas Muller $30
Rating Group E Jordan Messenger $30

The Random Prize - a chess set - was won by Kantley Wu

The field of 42 was well down on the usual numbers, almost certainly due to the unwise choice of Mother's Day for the event. We'll try and plan a little better for this tournament next year.

Thanks to John Dennis and Shirley Mazzer for directing this successful congress.

Here are some photos of the players.

Gold Coast Active Championships

81 players participated in the Gold Coast Active Championships. Fears of overcrowding proved unfounded in the new Gardiner Chess Centre.

Arianne Caoili finished first on 6.5/7 ahead of Stephen Solomon and Anastasiya Sorokina on 6. Natalie Mills finished 4th. How good to see three women in the top four. At one stage Stephen Solomon was the only male on the top two boards. Arianne defeated Anastasiya in round 5 and Stephen in round 6 before agreeing a draw with Natalie in round 7.

Moulthun Ly, aged 11, came 5th confirming that he is an outstanding prospect.

Gold Coast Primary Schools Teams Championships

The first round of the Gold Coast Primary Schools Teams Championships was held at the Robina Town Centre Community Hall on Tuesday/Wednesday 18/19 March. 773 students from 38 schools participated. This Gold Coast Chess Club event is co-sponsored by Gardiner Chess and Heritage Building Society.

Gold Coast Junior Championships 26/27 April 2003

Fifty-nine players took part in the Gold Coast Junior Championships with time controls of 60 minutes plus 10 seconds a move (Fischer).

Arianne Caoili deservedly won the event on 6.5/7, although she was given some tough competition and some scares along the way. Moulthun Ly again showed that he is already one of the top players by defeating Ben Lazarus, although he then showed that he was human by losing to Chris Page in 13 moves.

The Pines Shopping Centre One Day Junior Tournament, 24 April 2003

130 players participated in this tournament.

Chris Hardy won the event and $200 on countback from Philip Ee $30 and Arianne Caoili. All three scored 7/8, with Phachara Wongwichit, Shaun Chen and Sam Long scoring 6.5/8.

The big upset of the day was the defeat of WIM Arianne Caoili (ACF Rapid 2296) by Moulthun Ly (ACF Rapid 764)! Arianne recovered to defeat Phachara Wongwichit in the last round but the damage had already been done. Moulthun finished in a large bunch of talented juniors on 6/8. Chris Hardy appeared to have an easier path through to the final round, but he came through well after dropping a game to Shaun Chen.

Rating Group winners ($30 each) were:

A     Shaun Chen
B     Kevin Zhu
C     Nathan Fisher
D     Rui Hoshino
E     Daniel Lui
F     Dominic Asley

Unrated 1st Ben Boulter $40, 2nd Xander Leicht $30, 3rd Timothy Stanley $20.

Only two local schools competed for The Pines Schools Teams Event. Elanora Primary and St Andrews shared the trophy, both scoring 13.5.

See The Pines Shopping Centre One Day Event April 03>> for the results.

Easter Weekender at the Gardiner Chess Centre

Phachara Wongwichit and Peter Cormick shared equal first place in the Easter Weekender held at the Gardiner Chess Centre on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 April. Third place went to David Lovejoy who was equal on points with Chris Hardy (who took the group A rating prize). Other ratings prizes were won by Kelvin Finke and Moulthun Ly (B), Sam Grigg-Tondeleir (C) and Deborah Jenkins (D). Fifty-six players took part.

Top seed Anastasiya Sorokina never quite got going. She drew with Nenad Chelebichanin and Justin Pengelley and lost to Phachara Wongwichit.

Players who picked up rating points were Ric Kaspar, Jian Blundell, Nigel Thomas, Ashley Chynoweth, Rishabh Bhandari, Daniel Ford, Alex Buciu, Ashley Fisher, Oliver McCarthy, Udit Talpade, Curtis Jack, Shaun Curtis, Maxine Tan and Luthien Russell.

Unrated players who defeated rated players were Charis Chan, Danny McCarthy and Clarence Tan.

Corporate Charity Teams Challenge 2003

This event was won by Queensland School of Chess 1, comprising Jacob Edwards, Nik Stawski, Michael Davidovici and Kieron Olm-Milligan. 11 teams participated and raised approximately $1,500 for Paradise Kids. Many thanks to GM Ian Rogers, IM Stephen Solomon and WIM Anastasiya Sorokina for participating and agreeing to be auctioned for charity.

This was the fourth year that the event has been held. A very sociable and enjoyable time seemed to be had by all. Full results at:  Corporate Challenge 2002

Victorian Open

Gardiner Chess coach, International Master Stephen Solomon, has just returned from a weekend in Victoria where he won the Victorian Open. This adds to the Ballarat Begonia title he won earlier in the year. Stephen has been in fine form this year and continues to be one of the top performing players in the nation. Well done Stephen!

State of Origin Chess

Unlike that other sport, played at the revamped 'Lang Park', where the victors came from the south, Queensland State of Origin Chess reigns supreme, having beaten NSW 42.5/37.5 over two Wednesday evenings.

Gold Coast vs Logan Big Board Inter-City Match, held on Sunday 1 June

Jonathan Sarfati was the instigator of this event and a hotly-contested afternoon it was. Congratulations to Logan, which despite being outrated on most boards, fought hard for a memorable 7-5 victory.

Queensland Women's Championships

Sixteen players participated in this event at the Gardiner Chess Centre over the weekend 24/25 May.

As expected, Women's International Master Anastasiya Sorokina won the event on 5.5/6 dropping only a draw to defending champion Karina Mowles. Karina came runner up and newcomer Deborah Jenkins played very well to take out third place.

Alexandra Jule and Kieran Lyons tied for the junior prize on 4/6 with Kieran winning the trophy on tie-break. The cadet prize was deservedly won by Luthien Russell on 3/6.
