Stephen Solomon has won the Nell Van De Graaff Classic with a score of 6.5/7. He was in trouble in his first game against Oleg Korenevski (a rook down), and hung on for a draw against Arianne Caoili in round 5. Arianne finished second on 6 with Khalimzhan Abylkassov, Phachara Wongwichit and Ben Lazarus third on 5.5.

The ratings prize winners were:

A Ben Lazarus 5.5,
B Kelvin Finke, Alex Jule, Jim Laky and Ric Kaspar 4
C Yitao Lei 5
D Colin Xiao 4.5
E Oliver McCarthy, Jordan Messenger and Leoma Lee 3

The event also doubled as a teams event, with teams limited to a maximum rating of 1500 (increased from 1400 as the lower figure of 1400 became mathematically unworkable). The winning team on 17.5 was the Lazarus team comprising Ben Lazarus, Brock McIntyre, Michael Gearing and Colin Xiao. Second on countback was the Grey Lake Boys team and third the Formidable team.

Nell Van De Graaff participated in the event, giving her usual whole-hearted performance. She gave a very gracious speech at the prize-giving ceremony. The event was previously named the Gold coast Classic, but was renamed in recognition of the wonderfully positive influence Nell has been on Gold Coast chess for the last 12 years.

Earlier rounds:

The David Richards-led Mudgeeraba burst into the lead at the end of round two of the inaugural Winter Regional Teams event. GM Ian Rogers was a surprise late inclusion in the Robina team, Matt Sonter on board one for the Southern Suburbs team being the sacrificial lamb. Peter Cormick's Nerang team are, as usual, very competitive and are nicely placed in second position, just two countback points off the pace. The board one results were wins to Ian Rogers and Justin Pengelley over Matt Sonter and David Richards respectively, and a draw between Peter Cormick and Alex Ruddy.

Team Standings after Round Two:

  Team Points Individual Points
Mudgeeraba 10.5
Nerang  2 8.5
Eastern Suburbs 1 6.5
Robina  1 5.0
Northern Suburbs 0 3.0
Southern Suburbs 0 2.5

There were some lopsided results in round one of the Winter Regional Teams event held at the chess centre on Monday evening. Nerang defeated Southern Suburbs 5-1, Eastern Suburbs defeated Robina 5.5-0.5 and Mudgeeraba defeated Northern Suburbs 5.5-0.5.

On board one, Matt Sonter defeated Toshi Kimura, David Richards defeated Alex Ruddy and Justin Pengelley defeated Terry Munro.

Junior Masters Tournament  term 1
-
full results can be found here

Round 8 Daniel Ford has won the junior masters for this term with 7/8, despite a last round loss to Sam Grigg. Whilst the victory for Sam was a well-deserved reward for a very good tournament, Daniel deserved his tournament victory for applying himself so well throughout the eight rounds.

Final standings:

Daniel Ford 7
Jayden Fisher 6
Sam Grigg 6
Scott Underwood 5.5
Zane Weitenberg 5
Nicholas Webb 5
Lachlan Pedersen-Lee 5
Sean Underwood 4.5
Brendan Baker 4.5

25 competitors

Time controls 90 mins a side plus 30 secs a move

Probably the two biggest improvers in this event were Scott Underwood and Christina Webb. Many thanks to WIM Petra Blazkova and Matthew Sonter for their splendid work throughout the term on post game analysis. Congratulations to the players on their substantial improvement in playing ability.

Round seven - Daniel Ford continued on his winning way in the penultimate round of the junior masters by defeating Lachlan Pedersen-Lee. He now leads on a picket fence 7/7. The only player who has a chance to catch Daniel is Jayden Fisher who is on 6 after a close win over Sean Underwood. They are followed by Sam Grigg and Zane Weitenberg on 5.

Round six - Daniel Ford is now out on his own on a picket fence 6/6 from Jayden Fisher on 5 and a large group on 4. However, the standard of games seems to be improving each week, and the quality of the field seems to be bunching up at the top. So Daniel is likely to be very strongly pressed in the last two rounds.

Jayden Fisher and Daniel Ford had good wins in Round four and now hold the joint lead on 4/4. Brendan Baker and Molly McGarity had upset wins.

Round three, 2 March: After three rounds the leaders are Daniel Ford and Jayden Fisher on 3/3. The surprise packet is Christina Webb, rated 807, who is on 2.5/3. The standard of play continues to improve week by week with the excellent after-game analysis by WIM Petra Blazkova and Matthew Sonter.

Round three, which was due to be played on 24 February, had to be postponed due to the floods affecting all roads around the centre. Too many of the competitors were simply unable to get to the chess, so we thought it prudent for those already here to phone their parents and get picked up. Thankfully, the floods receded a little after a couple of hours, allowing everyone to get home safely. One suspects, however, that some of them would have been quite happy to stay here all night!

Our thanks go to the helpful drivers who ferried stranded kids and adults back to higher ground. Hopefully the car belonging to one of our new chess mums, which she found floating around in the school car park, will be back on the road shortly.

Rounds 3 to 8 had to be put back a week, with the final round now scheduled for Tuesday 6 April.

Gold Coast Chess Club Rapid Championships

The club rapid championships, which were held over five Wednesday nights, finished on Wednesday 10 March with the top four, round robin, finals night.

Bernie Saavedra deservedly won the finals with 2.5/3, followed by Fred Rosenow and Kelvin Finke on 1.5 and Terry Munro on 0.5.

The Doeberl Cup - Easter 2004

Nik Stawski, Matt Sonter, Petra Blazkova, Nathan Davidson, Ric Kaspar, Alexandra Jule, Steven Cooke and Kantley Wu along with Jenny Kaspar and Graeme & Wendy Gardiner travelled on the Gardiner Chess bus for the famous Doeberl Cup event. Jessica Kinder, Justin Pengelley, Moulthun Ly, Stephen Solomon, Amy & Debbie Evans, and Ingrid Thompson flew there. Can't imagine why they wanted to miss out on a 15 hour bus trip there and back . . . !

The Doeberl Cup attracted a record 223 entrants, with a very strong premier division including 2 GMs and 5 IMs.

Petra Blazkova did very well to score 4/7 in the premier division, playing GM Darryl Johansen in the final round. Alex Jule shared her rating prize in the Minor division, an excellent result. Steven Cooke did very well and Jessica Kinder and Kantley Wu each picked up a swag of rating points by defeating several higher rated players. Nathan Davidson was right up amongst the leaders throughout the event.

Amendments to results

There have been a couple of corrections to the results of championship grade. As a result TSS (McDonald) move up to 5th place and the Somerset (Beresford) team are relegated to A grade. Scott Underwood defeated Imran Aumeerally in round one (previously recorded as a loss). The results files have been corrected.

All Saints (McCarthy) were the surprise winners of Gold Coast Primary Schools Round Two in the Championship Grade, finishing on 15 just ahead of Worongary (Finke) on 14.5 who have dominated the event for the last two or three years. The Somerset (Thompson) team came third on 14.5.

Board prize winners in this grade were: Board 1: Kelvin Finke, Board 2: Leoma Lee, Board 3: Jessica Kinder & Jayden Fisher (shared) and Board 4: Shaun Mah.

In A Grade Mudgeeraba Creek (Muller) were clear winners from St Vincent's (Richards) with St Augustine's (Pizzol) third. Individually Yitao Lee came first from Sam Grima and Jonas Muller.

The results mean that Mudgeeraba Creek (Muller) and St Vincent's (Richards) qualify for Championship Grade on Finals Day along with Trinity (Contacos) and Saint Stephen's (Moren). Unfortunately Robina (Lam), Somerset (Beresford)
[not TSS (McDonald) as previously recorded], Guardian Angels (Turco) and All Saints (Tan) are relegated from Championship Grade.

A new record of 864 students from 43 state and private schools competed over the two days (Northside 344, Southside 473, Championship Grade 47).

Gold Coast Primary Schools Championships - Round 1

Another record turnout of primary school children for Round one - a massive 829! In the north zone there were 346 and 483 for the south zone, alongside the Championship Grade. There is now some discussion about running each round over three days in 2005, or possibly at three separate venues. Of course, logistics and financial viability are key factors.

Congratulations to Worongary Primary who continue their domination of primary schools chess of recent years, with a clear win in championship grade.

The four teams relegated from Championship Grade are Somerset - Beresford, Worongary - Thorn, St Vincent's - Richards and Trinity - Contacos. The four teams promoted in their place are Southside: All Saints - Tan and Kings Christian - Eom, Northside: Guardian Angels - Walsh and Emmanuel - Lui.

Round two took place on Tuesday 11 May (Northside) and Wednesday 12 May (Southside and Championship Grade).

Results of all grades, see: Primary Schools

Championship Grade GCP, Round 1

1:  Worongary - Finke 18.5/20
